A headphone is a small pair of loudspeakers that convert an electrical signal to a corresponding sound worn on or around the head using a band to let the user listen to an audio source privately. On the other hand, a headset combines a headphone with a mic usually made with a single or double-earpiece to provide the equivalent functionality of a telephone handset but with hands-free operation. Both are widely used for PC to listen to the audio in isolation.

The only way of listening to electrical audio signals before amplifiers were the telephone receiver earpiece that is the origin of the headphone. In 1910, Nathaniel Baldwin had developed the first successful headset that sold it to US Navy but John C. Koss, an audiophile and jazz musician from Milwaukee, produced the first stereo headphones in 1958. Previously, headphones were used only by the US navy or other similar industries as telephone and radio operators but later smaller earbuds developed for hearing aids became widely used with transistor radios that eventually commercialized in 1954 as Regency TR-1.
